Chapter 17
Rory
I ate and listened to everyone speak—mostly argue over who should tell me what was going on. I didn’t really care who told me, I just wanted to know what was still lost in my head.
“I’m a princess. I was betrothed to Phillip, but I fell in love with Sawyer, even though that was not allowed. Dr. M, or Maleficent, created this horrible place so that she could become Queen of my kingdom. Phillip is dead, but I didn’t kill him. I’m not crazy, and I’m pretty sure none of you are either,” I said pointing to them all. They stared at me and some nodded. “I understand all of that. I remember being a princess. I remember Phillip. I … I hurt him. He went into the woods because someone had shot an arrow at him. What I want is to know where my family is and why she did this. I don’t want to hear any more half-truths. I want full answers. Now!”
My patience was depleted.
Sawyer came close and took me by the hand leading me into a small room where Gray was lighting candles.
“She’s ready, Gray. No more leaving her in the dark. She remembers almost everything,” he pleaded. I squeezed his hand in a silent thank you.
Gray turned toward me and her silver hair shone in the light. It looked even more magical than ever.
“You are important to the Fae, aren’t you?” I asked.
“Yes. I’m the leader of the Fae Warriors. We fight evil and all that threatens the woods. We were thought to be disbanded after Maleficent took over, but that was a secret we didn’t share with anyone, until now. We hid and waited for the right time to act.”
Simple answer, yet I had more questions. I’d let it go for now. The answers would come to me in time.
“Okay. So how does Maleficent not know you? She’s was a fairy who turned evil, and you are a warrior.”
She chuckled.
“Maleficent knows nothing of her kind anymore. She was cast out after her affair with a king. It’s not the worst offense for a fairy, but when she tried to kill the king’s wife, well, that forced the Fae Council’s hand. They had no choice but to make her leave.”
“An affair with a king?” I asked, confused.
Gray held up her hand and said, “Yes. First, you must know she is not a warrior. She’s evil, but she never used to be. Maleficent used to be just like most of the fairies here with us—a regular female fairy that had friends and family. She had no real powers then, besides the usual ones all Fae are born with: the power of sight, the ability to glamour themselves, and shifting shape.”
My head snapped up, and I thought of Raven.
“So, is Raven a fairy?”
“She is part of a different realm of Fae, the shapeshifters. They are fairies essentially, but they shift shape—but that is all they can do. They do not hold all of the Fae abilities.
